Sustainable Living

Cultivating Sustainability As a Way of Life

Jhamtse Gatsal embraces sustainability as an ethos. With each community member acting as an eco-steward, we consciously and responsibly interact with our natural resources in daily life. Our daily activities and educational programs help us nourish our soil, grow our food, recycle our waste and give back to Mother Earth.

ORGANIC FARMING PRACTICES

We take care of our land and grow our own food using regenerative farming techniques, like hydroponics, organic farming, mulching, crop rotation, vermicomposting and bio-enzymes. From the youngest to the oldest, everyone pitches in to make it happen!

The power of planting a seedin the ground or in the minds of others is the first step towards a sustainable future.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

We strive to be zero-waste by being conscious consumers, segregating and upcycling our waste, and recycling our plastic to reduce our carbon footprint. We are a plastic waste collection and recycling center for our district as well as a knowledge hub for waste management practices.

We all, as members of the Community, realized that in order to change our region wefirst needed to change ourselves—our choices and our practices.

ECO-FRIENDLY CONSTRUCTION

We integrate natural construction, renewable energy, and rainwater harvesting into our climate-controlled cob houses. Our approach focuses on blending traditional indigenous knowledge with modern techniques, prioritizing cultural relevance and ecological responsibility, while being responsive to our seismically-sensitive location.

Only when each individual realizes it is essential to pay nature’s kindness forwardcan we move forward as a whole.

~ Srijana S, Budding Jhamtse Changemaker

CLEAN ENERGY and WATER MANAGEMENT

We aim to become self-reliant and energy independent by harnessing our solar potential. These efforts have resulted in 60% solar backup for key buildings on campus.

We are mindful in our use of water, and practice rainwater harvesting as well as black and gray water recycling through the DEWATS approach.

SEEDS, HORTICULTURE and APICULTURE

We collect local seeds to build a robust seed bank of native crops and to preserve indigenous seeds for the food security of our future generations.

We grow fruit-bearing trees like walnuts, peaches, and apricots as well as indigenous varietals of pine and medicinal herbs native to the Himalayan region, along with apiculture practices to collect and sell organic, wild, high-altitude honey.

Support our Sustainability Initiatives

Whether it is organic farming, zero-waste practices, eco-friendly construction, clean energy, or water management, you can help us reach our overarching goal to become self-reliant in the near future.
